Cooperative Agreement

Overview

Grant Description
Programming supports a comprehensive network of cooperative study units to facilitate cooperative research, technical assistance, education, and training to inform science-based management of the National Park System.

The study units facilitate multidisciplinary science and integrated information products across multiple geographic regions of the National Park System.

The non-native Southern House Mosquito (Culex quinquefasciatus) is the primary carrier of non-native avian malaria in Hawaii, a disease that is decimating Hawaiian forest bird populations.

The National Park Service and the University of Hawaii will stand up a team to lead all aspects of the first Wolbachia incompatible insect technique (IIT) deployment to suppress wild Culex mosquitoes on the ground. Field crews will release sufficient numbers of incompatible male mosquitoes in key forest bird habitats of East Maui to overflood the wild males.

Subsequent monitoring activities will consist of capturing mosquitoes in release areas to detect changes in abundance and customize releases based on mosquito population across the landscape. This project will provide the data needed to inform adaptive management practices and update the knowledge base for managing this pest species.

Beneficiaries include state and local governments, federally recognized Indian tribal governments, public-private nonprofit organizations, nonprofit institutions of higher education, and the general public.
