Overview
Grant Description
Application Purpose: This initial grant application includes a partial amount of the the FY 2023 community project funding/Congressionally directed spending for preliminary engineering and project management activities related to the Merlo Bus Maintenance Facility Retrofit Project (discretionary ID #2023-CMPJ-094). The remaining funds will be added when NEPA is completed.
Activities Performed: Federal funds will help fund the first phase of the Merlo Bus Maintenance Retrofit as part of a broader strategy for expansion of zero emission battery electric buses (BEBs). Activities include construction/site work for garage and utility upgrades installation of eight (8) charging stations for articulated buses training curriculum for operators and maintenance staff and contingency for labor and materials.
Expected Outcomes: Federal funds will help fund the first phase of Trimets Merlo Bus Maintenance Retrofit as part of a broader strategy for expansion of zero emission battery electric buses (BEBs). Activities include construction/site work for garage and utility upgrades installation of eight (8) charging stations for articulated buses training curriculum for operators and maintenance staff and contingency for labor and materials. Improvements to the Merlo Bus Maintenance Facility are critical investments to be able implement dedicated articulated zero emission bus service on Tualatin Valley Highway in the short-term.
The expanded charging infrastructure and retrofitting are a first step to scaling up the garage for future charging maintenance and service deployment of articulated and BEBs.
Intended Beneficiaries: Improvements at the Merlo Facility will benefit Trimet riders by adding more service and future articulated buses on the west side of the Portland region. Merlo Bus Maintenance Facility is located in an area with higher than average low income people of color and limited English proficiency and is in an equity focus area for the 2018 RTP. Merlo currently houses and services 245 buses many of which serve Trimets equity lines or transit dependent populations. This investment will provide funding to increase transit capacity in areas with growing ridership increase access to transit and improve air quality in the surrounding area by facilitating the transition from diesel to zero emission buses.
Subrecipient Activities: The recipient does not intend to subaward funds.
