Grant Description
Application Purpose: The purpose is station improvements making the stations ADA-accessible three new traction power substations and related improvements.
Activities Performed: The Canarsie Line Power and Station Improvements Project (Project) increases station and line haul capacity along the Canarsie L Line. The project includes installation of three new traction power substations (Avenue B #274 Maspeth #275 and Harrison #276) between the 8th Avenue Station in Manhattan and the Myrtle-Wyckoff Avenue Station in Brooklyn as well as installation of low-resistance contact rail in the Canarsie Tunnel.
In addition, the project includes the rehabilitation of the two circuit breaker houses (CBH #61 and CBH #62) located outside of the Canarsie Tunnel. The project adds new station entrances consisting of stairwells fare control areas and ADA-compliant elevators at the 1st Avenue Station in Manhattan and installs new stairs elevators and expanded fare control areas at the Bedford Avenue Station.
Expected Outcomes: The improvements will allow an increase in service frequency from 20 to 22 trains per hour and provide ADA accessibility and increase capacity at two stations.
Intended Beneficiaries: Commuters along the Canarsie L Line.
