Grant Description
The grant requests Federal Fiscal Year 2022 Section 5307 capital assistance in the amount of $14,583,349 ($18,229,186 total) and Federal Fiscal Year 2022 Section 5339 funding in the amount of $441,786 ($552,232 total) to support Nassau County's bus system, the Nassau Inter-County Express Capital Program. Section 5307 and Section 5339 include funding for rolling stock, and the fleet status has been updated accordingly. One percent of the Section 5307 funds will be utilized for security projects, and three-quarter percent for safety projects.

Nassau County, as the designated recipient, is the responsible party under this grant. As of January 1, 2012, Transdev Transportation Inc. is the licensed operator of Nassau County's bus system, the Nassau Inter-County Express (NICE), through a fixed route bus and paratransit operation management and license agreement. Nassau County maintains control over the facilities and equipment and ensures that they are in good operating order. The local share will be provided by Nassau County (10%) and the New York State Department of Transportation (10%). The public notice for these projects was July 14, 2021.

Purpose: To maintain the NICE operation in a state of good repair.

Activities to be performed: Replacement and upgrade of the NICE fixed route/paratransit vehicles and facilities.

Expected outcomes: A transit operation that meets the needs of the system.

Intended beneficiaries: The ridership of the NICE transit system that serves Nassau County, Western Suffolk, and Eastern Queens counties.
