Project Grant

Overview

Grant Description
Application purpose: RTC is seeking funding for six replacement hydrogen fuel cell electric buses (FCEB) and associated fueling infrastructure to replace aging diesel hybrid units that are well beyond their useful life and to expand its hydrogen fleet.

These vehicles build upon RTC's long history as being an early adopter for alternative fueled vehicles.

Hydrogen fuel cells represent the next generation of zero-emission transit technologies and these buses, unlike traditional battery-electric, provide the solution for the longer operational ranges needed for coverage on all our transit routes and for faster refueling.

RTC's first hydrogen vehicles will be delivered and placed into service at the end of 2023.

The growth of our hydrogen program will improve RTC's services by addressing the limitations with battery technologies, broaden our portfolio of alternative vehicles, and continue RTC's commitment towards providing our services in the most efficient and responsible way possible.

Activities performed: Purchase hydrogen buses, purchase hydrogen tank and fueling station, training and consulting.

Expected outcomes: Reduce energy consumption, reduce harmful emissions, reduce direct carbon emissions.

Intended beneficiaries: The Reno area is a region with poor air quality and other environmental justice concerns where strong demand for transit services already exists.

The expansion of zero emission buses in this region will not only benefit transit riders but also the community at-large by eliminating emissions generated from the older diesel-hybrid powered buses.

Subrecipient activities: None.
Funding Goals
THE LOW OR NO EMISSION COMPETITIVE PROGRAM PROVIDES FUNDING FOR THE PURCHASE OR LEASE OF ZERO-EMISSION AND LOW-EMISSION TRANSIT BUSES AS WELL AS ACQUISITION CONSTRUCTION AND LEASING OF REQUIRED SUPPORTING FACILITIES.
