Grant Description
Application purpose: The purpose of this award is to provide funding for FLEXRIDE demonstration services.
These funds will be used to support startup of new transit services such as new express bus routes or shuttle services linking major activity centers.
Within the last few years the RTC implemented the microtransit service FLEXRIDE which offers passengers a cost-effective ridesharing option.
This service was initiated as a pilot project in areas that were experiencing an underperforming fixed route service.
Removing or reducing fixed route service is often met with complaints and negative media stories but the RTC used an innovative approach to increase passenger satisfaction and accessibility while reducing routes.
As transit agencies strive to stay relevant with their ridership more and more agencies are exploring the opportunities to implement micro transit options within their service areas.
The launch of FLEXRIDE was met with immediate success and as a result RTC recently launched similar service in an area of South Reno with no existing fixed route service.
Future performance of this service may inform feasibility of enhancing fixed route service in the larger South Reno area.
Activities performed: RTC FLEXRIDE will provide curbside-to-curbside transit service in the Reno Sparks and Washoe County areas.
Expected outcomes: FLEXRIDE service will expand the Sparks service area into select areas of Spanish Springs Verdi/Somerset and newly implemented South Reno area.
Intended beneficiaries: Transit riders in the Reno and Sparks service areas.
