Overview
Grant Description
Application Purpose: The purpose of this grant is to improve safety through the procurement and installation of pedestrian detection and collision avoidance technology on public transit vehicles. RTC plans to take a proactive approach for safety by in installing advanced technology on its vehicles that will provide operators with early warnings for nearby pedestrians and also alert drivers to potential collisions.
Activities Performed: This grant will fund the procurement and installation of pedestrian detection and collision avoidance technology on fixed route public transit vehicles.
Expected Outcomes: The on board pedestrian detection and collision avoidance equipment will improve safety for pedestrians cyclists transit riders and motorists through real-time alerts for drivers providing operators with enough time to react and avoid collisions. The system will also enable RTC to collect alert data which will help to identify areas of conflict between pedestrians or cyclists and vehicles and identify additional infrastructure improvement needs such as median fencing bicycle lanes wider sidewalks or improved pedestrian crossings.
Intended Beneficiaries: RTC operators customers and the general traveling public will benefit from this technology that will provide both visual and audio alerts a well as blind spot detection that will help to reduce the number of accidents involving public transit vehicles on Southern Nevada roadways.
