Cooperative Agreement

Overview

Grant Description
Maine's ELC 2024 grant application - The State of Maine (population 1,395,722) has the oldest population of all the United States, with a median age of just over 45 years.

Nearly one-quarter (22.5%) of its citizens are age 65 or older.

Maine is a largely rural state, and its largest cities, and its healthcare hubs, are all in the southern third of its 31,000 square miles.

6.6% of its citizens have no health insurance.

The infectious diseases in Maine with the highest case counts are COVID-19, Chlamydia, Lyme disease, and Hepatitis C.

Portland, Maine is a sanctuary city and Maine has seen an increase in refugees and asylee seekers in the last few years.

Maine is seeing a resurgence of some diseases that were either trending down, or we haven't seen in years including high cases of tuberculosis and the first congenital syphilis cases seen in decades.

Maine has seen outbreaks in our unstably housed populations, as well as in those with substance use disorder.

Maine must take a holistic approach towards health as we are seeing the world shrink and unusual cases and circumstances are no longer unusual.
