Overview

Grant Description
Advancing Population-Based Surveillance of Birth Defects in Michigan

Michigan's five-year population-based surveillance of birth defects program will implement components A, B, and C by advancing public health infrastructure through surveillance utilization to improve responses to emerging threats, identifying and addressing mechanisms contributing to public health disparities, and reducing morbidity and mortality rates.

This will be accomplished through activities that continue to improve and expand population-based monitoring of birth outcomes through the Birth Defects Registry System to achieve three identified goals:

1) Improving birth defects surveillance capacity and data quality.
2) Leveraging electronic health records and interoperability capabilities.
3) Using surveillance data to increase access to health services and early intervention programs to improve prevention of birth defects and health outcomes of affected populations.

The Michigan Birth Defects Registry and the Birth Defects Education and Outreach Program will increase capacity to accomplish our goals through collaboration and networking with public health programs at the national, state, and local level.
