Cooperative Agreement
Overview
Grant Description
To enhance the ability of state health departments (SHDs) to track and prevent nonfatal and fatal overdoses while also identifying emerging drug threats.
Purpose:
The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (WVDHHR), Bureau for Public Health (State Health Department/SHD), will promote the use of surveillance strategies, evidence-informed interventions, and other data to track and prevent nonfatal and fatal overdoses statewide. These efforts will build on the work, expertise, and lessons learned from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) previous cooperative agreement, Overdose Data to Action (OD2A), to inform evidence-based prevention with a focus on opioids, stimulants, and emerging drug threats including changes in the illicit drug supply and a rise in polysubstance overdoses.
Administration of this proposed work will be the responsibility of the West Virginia Violence and Injury Prevention Program (VIPP), which is housed within the Office of Maternal, Child and Family Health (OMCFH).
Outcomes:
Multi-sector collaborations and strong partnerships between the VIPP, West Virginia Center for Local Health, the West Virginia Board of Pharmacy, the West Virginia Bureau for Medical Services (Medicaid Program), the West Virginia Bureau for Behavioral Health, the West Virginia Bureau for Children and Families, the West Virginia University (WVU) School of Pharmacy, the West Virginia Hospital Association, Marshall University, the West Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS), the West Virginia Office of Epidemiology and Prevention Services (OEPS), the West Virginia Health Statistics Center (HSC), the West Virginia Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME), and the West Virginia Department of Corrections will enable this project to drive state-level outcomes.
