Overview
Grant Description
Miami-Dade's Initiative to Address COVID-19 Health Disparities Among Populations at High-Risk and Underserved, Including Racial and Ethnic Minority Populations
The Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County (FDOH-MDC) is the local health department operating under the Florida Department of Health (FDOH), located in the state capital of Tallahassee. FDOH-MDC serves Miami-Dade County (MDC), located in the southeastern part of Florida.
The FDOH-MDC learned there are many concerns, barriers, and health disparities that exist throughout the county through the utilization of evidence-based community assessments. When these disparities are examined through the lens of COVID-19, data highlights the true disparities and impact that communities of color and underserved communities have faced during this ongoing pandemic. Risk factors for disease, illness, and mortality, socioeconomic and environmental conditions, inequities in health, and quality of life are exacerbated when combined with COVID-19.
In response to addressing these challenges, FDOH-MDC proposes to address COVID-19 related health disparities and to advance health equity by expanding capacity of the local county health department (CHD) to provide services and to prevent and control the spread of COVID-19 among populations at higher risk and that are underserved. Through the selection of the above-mentioned strategies, FDOH-MDC will create infrastructure designed to address disparities in COVID-19 and work to lay a foundation for future response in an equitable manner that addresses the needs of each community.
