Need of the Project: Located in North Mississippi and the Mississippi Delta, Strategic Solutions for Families, Inc. is a community-based, 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization that serves as the fiscal agent for the Solid Ground Drug-Free Community Coalition (SOLID GROUND).
The Solid Ground Coalition proposes to implement comprehensive drug-free community activities designed around the seven strategies for community-level change to build community capacity to address factors that increase the risk of substance use among teens and promote the protective factors that minimize the risk of substance use among teens by strengthening collaboration among communities, public and private non-profit agencies, federal, state, and local governments.
Solid Ground will collaborate with the following required sectors: youth, parents, businesses, media, schools, youth-serving organizations, religious or fraternal organizations, law enforcement civic or volunteer groups, healthcare professionals, local government agencies, recovery programs, and veteran agencies to implement evidence-based prevention activities that limit access to substances, change the culture and context on how decisions about substance abuse are made, shift consequences associated with substance use to not penalize, but better support youth, and address issues related to health disparities and health inequities.
Protective factors are defined as "characteristics or strengths of individuals, families, communities or societies that act to mitigate risks and promote positive well-being and healthy development (Strengthening Families, 2020)."
Proposed Services and Target Population: Solid Ground will target youth between the ages of 13 – 18 residing in Booneville, Prentiss County, Mississippi (38829) and attending either the Prentiss County School District or the Booneville School District.
Prentiss County has a population of 25,155 with the majority of the population (82.27%) being white. The second largest race is African American (9.8%) and third largest race is Asian (2.5%) (Mississippi, 2022).
The per capita income for Prentiss County is $19,693 compared to the state average of $23,424. More than 22.6% of children living in Prentiss County live in poverty and 22.1% are from single-parent families and nearly 22.9% live in poverty.
Organizational Capacity: Under the oversight of the Executive Director, the Director of Grants and Programs has 30 years of project management experience and will lead a qualified project team dedicated to providing parents, foster parents, community members, teachers, and potential parents a Parent Academy, culturally-responsive and quality Parent Academy.
