Overview
Grant Description
The Great Lakes play a crucial role in protecting regional climate patterns, supporting agriculture and industry in the Midwest, and supplying the nation with fresh water.
To address the effects of climate change on the Great Lakes and other challenges (flooding; harmful algal blooms; the increase in extreme weather events), GENER8TOR will create and operate the Great Lakes Resilience Accelerator (GLRA), a 12-week accelerator that will invest non-dilutively in 60 startups focused on ocean renewable energy, carbon sequestration, hazard mitigation and coastal resilience, and ecosystem services.
By developing solutions for these critical freshwater issues, the GLRA aims to create innovations applicable to water-related challenges worldwide.
The GLRA will help overcome the hurdles water- and ocean-related startups face, such as high capital requirements, long development cycles, strict environmental and regulatory challenges, a lack of necessary infrastructure, limited investor understanding, perceived inherent risk, the absence of a track record, and the global nature of water-related challenges.
