Cooperative Agreement

Overview

Grant Description
The National Marine Fisheries Service and the Maine Department of Marine Resources (DMR) are working together to help restore Atlantic salmon and the ecosystems they depend on.

This partnership is part of a long-term effort to recover salmon populations in Maine's rivers, especially those in the Gulf of Maine.

The goal is to bring back wild Atlantic salmon by restoring rivers, using hatcheries wisely, and tracking progress carefully.

Atlantic salmon populations in Maine have been dangerously low since the late 1980s.

These fish live part of their lives in rivers and part in the ocean, and they've been affected by problems in both habitats.

Because of this, efforts to bring them back must focus on restoring rivers and supporting hatchery programs that raise young salmon.

Focusing on three key river areas, DMR will track salmon numbers, monitor habitat improvement projects, and help with hatchery efforts.

They'll also work in other salmon rivers as needed, especially to check how many salmon are returning and how well hatchery programs are working.
