Project Grant
Overview
Grant Description
The purpose of this project is to help the Bristol Bay Red King Crab (BBRKC) (Paralithodes camtschaticus) population rebound, and with it, the fishermen, processors, and communities (such as Saint Paul Island, Unalaska, Akutan, Sand Point, Kodiak, and Homer) that rely on this important commercial fishery valued at approximately $60,000,000 ex-vessel and $120,000,000 first wholesale annually.
This project will help bridge a critical lack of recruitment for BBRKC which has resulted in closures of the fishery in 2021 and 2022.
The project partners will raise king crab larvae in a hatchery from wild broodstock and release juvenile crab, to increase the likelihood of species survival in the wild.
