Overview

Grant Description
The Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council (MAFMC) is one of eight regional fishery management councils in the United States.

Councils recommend fishery management measures to the Secretary of Commerce through the National Marine Fisheries Service.

Over the five-year project period, as prescribed under the MSA, the MAFMC will participate in fishery management plan development, amendments and monitoring activities.

The MAFMC currently manages 64 species under seven FMPs.

The MAFMC coordinates its management activities closely with the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission and the adjacent regional fishery management councils to ensure that fisheries are managed effectively across jurisdictional boundaries.

In addition, the councils must meet the unprecedented challenges associated with climate drivers and the rate of change in species distributions and productivity.

Implement enhanced ecosystem approaches to fishery management, leadership-level engagement with regional marine spatial planning efforts, increased cross-jurisdictional governance consultations, and requirements for educational outreach to council members and the public on ongoing and emergent issues.
Funding Goals
THE OBJECTIVES OF THE EIGHT REGIONAL FISHERY MANAGEMENT COUNCILS ARE TO PREPARE, MONITOR AND REVISE FISHERY MANAGEMENT PLANS AND DATA COLLECTION PROGRAMS FOR DOMESTIC AND FOREIGN FISHING WITHIN THE 200-MILE U.S. EXCLUSIVE ECONOMIC ZONE (EEZ). THIS IS DONE WITH APPROVAL AND IMPLEMENTATION BY THE SECRETARY OF COMMERCE WHO HAS STEWARDSHIP RESPONSIBILITY FOR LIVING MARINE RESOURCES IN THE EEZ UNDER THE MSFCMA.
