Cooperative Agreement
Overview
Grant Description
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is providing ongoing funding through the National Coastal Zone Management Program to the State of New York to help administer New York's federally approved coastal management program.
The National Coastal Zone Management Program, under the Coastal Zone Management Act, is an important voluntary federal-state partnership that protects, restores, and responsibly develops our nation's coastal communities and resources by balancing economic development, coastal uses, and natural resource protection.
NOAA's investment of over $3.1M is leveraging over $2.6M in state funds.
These funds will support jobs and provide continued assistance to the New York Coastal Management Program to address many important coastal issues in the state including coastal hazards and climate change impacts to coastal communities, climate resiliency, and regional ocean planning.
For example, one project will support the designation of a new National Marine Sanctuary in Eastern Lake Ontario, which is anticipated to occur within the award period.
Additionally, funding will support technical assistance to federal, state, and local governments as well as to non-governmental organizations to enhance their understanding of resilience concepts and adaptation planning.
This will lead to improved understanding of hazards and climate impacts, and how to reduce, manage, and adapt to coastal hazards and climate risks through the use of.
The funding also supports program administration, regional coastal management planning, ocean resource planning and management, offshore planning, commercial aquaculture siting, and more.
