Overview

Grant Description
Purpose: This project will facilitate innovative and technology-based solutions to reduce vessel strike risk on the endangered North Atlantic right whale.

The project will administer a North Atlantic right whale grant program focused on administering subgrants with the following focal areas:

(1) Aggregation of data relevant to whales and vessel strikes

(2) Whale detection and identification

(3) Tools to disseminate known whale presence and recommended actions to vessels

(4) And other tools including modifying vessels, enhancing understanding of existing data, and measuring impact of other efforts.

The program will focus on engaging the maritime industry and related stakeholders including technology developers, academic, and NGO groups to drive the development, testing, and implementation of technology and other innovations.

The project seeks to drive development and implementation of voluntary conservation and innovative solutions through direct work with fisheries and fishing communities as they tackle challenges.
Funding Goals
TO PROVIDE GRANTS AND COOPERATIVE AGREEMENTS OF BIOLOGICAL, SOCIO-ECONOMIC AND PHYSICAL SCIENCE RESEARCH ON THE STOCKS OF FISHERY AND PROTECTED RESOURCES OF THE UNITED STATES AND THEIR ENVIRONMENT THAT WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THEIR OPTIMAL MANAGEMENT FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE NATION, ALSO, TO AWARD GRANTS AND COOPERATIVE AGREEMENTS TO DEVELOP INNOVATIVE APPROACHES AND METHODS FOR MARINE AND ESTUARINE SCIENCE.
