Overview
Grant Description
Stockton University will conduct removal, research, and education activities in Southern New Jersey from Barnegat Bay to Delaware Bay.
This project expects to remove up to 25 abandoned and derelict vessels and an estimated 2,500 pieces of derelict fishing gear using side-scan sonar and grapples.
New industry partners will be trained to conduct scientific grade surveys using side scan sonar to identify and prioritize derelict fishing gear for removal.
A student training practicum will be administered to educate students and prepare them for partnership with industry professionals to serve as ambassadors to the crabbing industry.
Project activities also include developing outreach programs to engage teachers, students, and interns from existing local community programs on marine debris and derelict fishing gear.
Project partners will develop a community extension program which will include providing support to trained commercial crabbing partners, establishment of a sonar loan program for equipment sharing, and development of educational materials for public dissemination.
