Grant Description
ISLA MAR RESEARCH EXPEDITIONS, LLC PROPOSES THE SETTING THE BASELINE FOR A MARINE DEBRIS-FREE PUERTO RICO PROJECT TO SUPPORT COORDINATION, REMOVALS, AND PREVENTION AND OUTREACH EFFORTS FOR ABANDONED AND DERELICT VESSELS ACROSS PUERTO RICO. THE PROPOSED PROJECT WILL RUN FROM AUGUST 1, 2023 TO JULY 31, 2026. THE PROJECT PROPOSES TO REMOVE 70 ABANDONED AND DERELICT VESSELS FROM AROUND THE PUERTO RICO ARCHIPELAGO. THIS PROJECT WILL SUPPORT THE ENGAGEMENT OF YOUNG UNDERSERVED, LOW-INCOME, MINORITY STUDENTS IN SCIENCE AND MARINE BIOLOGY THROUGH VISITS TO SCHOOLS IN KEY BOATING MUNICIPALITIES AND STUDENT ENGAGEMENT IN A "SHADOWING A SCIENTIST" INITIATIVE. FIVE OTHER OUTREACH INITIATIVES WILL BE UNDERTAKEN. FIRST, A LOCAL SCULPTOR WILL CREATE FOUR ART INSTALLATIONS USING MARINE DEBRIS SALVAGED FROM THIS PROJECT. SECOND, TO AID IN PREVENTION OF ABANDONED AND DERELICT VESSELS, A SERIES OF WORKSHOPS WILL BE CONDUCTED AT SPECIFIC REGIONAL SITES AROUND THE ISLAND. THIRD, A SHORT V
