Cooperative Agreement

Overview

Grant Description
Virginia Institute of Marine Science will remove and recycle abandoned traps from Chesapeake Bay and will also administer a competitive grant program for the removal of derelict fishing traps across the country.

A communications strategy and associated tools will be developed to support the project's outreach efforts, including informational webinars for potential grant applicants and a website with a metric dashboard.

Virginia Institute of Marine Science will partner with Kenah Consulting to enhance participation in the program by underrepresented communities. This work will coordinate outreach to tribes and assist in tribal capacity building, where appropriate.

Current efforts to address the issue of derelict fishing gear are disconnected. This important work will not only allow organizations to access funds for removal of derelict fishing traps, but it will also coordinate tracking, monitoring, and assessment of these removal efforts in a manner that provides consistency in data.
