Cooperative Agreement

Overview

Grant Description
NOAA is awarding federal funding in the amount of $4,500,000 to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control under the FY2022 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Coastal Zone Management Habitat Restoration and Conservation Competition.

Conservation partners will use these funds to obtain key floodplain properties within two coastal counties for a new state park. To date, five strategic riverfront properties totaling 2,500 acres have been secured. The acquisition of this 1,800-acre tract is next.

This property creates a walkable connection to a rural town that has experienced both extreme flood damage and increasing poverty in recent years. The town of Andrews is currently engaged in a Main Street visioning and master planning process to link their economic future to the new park and to the Black River itself.

The Open Space Institute Land Trust intends to acquire the property on behalf of the South Carolina Parks Recreation and Tourism for the newly established Black River state park.
