Cooperative Agreement
Overview
Grant Description
Conservation International Foundation will be awarded $9,027,618. In close collaboration with the University of Hawaii at Mānoa and other partners, Conservation International will use this funding to construct permanent concrete reef framework structures off of Waikiki Beach on the island of Oahu.
These reef frameworks will serve as in-situ coral nurseries, attracting reef species known to benefit corals and becoming natural coral reefs. The goal of this project is to benefit the coral reef ecosystem and support the many species that rely on these habitats.
By enhancing the ecological resilience of Waikiki coral reefs, the project will also increase the socioeconomic resilience of the local communities that depend on them. Throughout all project phases, the project will engage with students, community members, and cultural practitioners.
This work is being funded by the FY2022 NOAA's Transformational Habitat Restoration and Coastal Resilience Grants under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA).
