Cooperative Agreement
Overview
Grant Description
The Nature Conservancy will be awarded up to $5,460,000 to restore shoreline and marsh habitat in Pickerel Creek Wildlife Area along Lake Erie's Sandusky Bay. The project is part of the broader Sandusky Bay Initiative, which aims to transform the bay into a cleaner, clearer resource benefiting wetlands, habitats, and fisheries.
When fully implemented, construction of an offshore berm will reduce wave energy and exposure, helping to rebuild and protect a historic shoreline that has been impacted by severe erosion. This will support the reestablishment of vegetated areas with slow-moving water that native Great Lakes species depend upon.
A barge access ramp and road will be constructed, improving public and emergency access and increasing recreational opportunities and public safety. The project will also help address significant water quality issues, including harmful algal blooms that are expected to worsen with climate change.
