Cooperative Agreement
Overview
Grant Description
The Nature Conservancy will be awarded $14,620,884 to construct a living shoreline breakwater to protect the southeast shoreline of Coffee Island in Mississippi Sound. Coffee Island is a front-line barrier to the northern Mississippi Sound coast, but it has been subject to high erosion rates.
This project will construct 5,000 feet of large, overlapping breakwaters, which will help protect marshes, seagrasses, and shorelines that serve as important habitat for recreational and commercial fish species. Protection of Coffee Island will also help provide resilience benefits to nearby coastal habitats and communities on the mainland of Mobile County, including important aquaculture installations in Portersville Bay.
