Cooperative Agreement
Overview
Grant Description
The Naugatuck Valley Council of Governments will be awarded up to $15,000,000 over three years to remove the Kinneytown Dam facility (Kinneytown Dam / Canal Reservoir Dam) on the mainstem of the Naugatuck River in Connecticut. The effort will open 29 mainstem miles for blueback herring, American shad, and alewife, and an additional 28 tributary miles for American eel.
Both dams are located in underserved communities, and public river access points will be developed at both sites, improving opportunities for boating and river use. The dams are safety hazards due to the potential for public injury and high risk of facility failure. Dam removal will reduce the flood risk to communities upstream and downstream of the project.
