Project Grant

Overview

Grant Description
The Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve received ownership of the Briggs Boardwalk from the Conservancy of Southwest Florida in December of 2020. This grant application would fund the demolition and re-building of a more resilient and inclusive boardwalk to provide educational and recreational opportunities to the community.

The reserve anticipates a three-year project for permit, demolition, and construction of the boardwalk. The new structure will be fully ADA compliant and have interpretative signage in multiple languages to make it accessible and welcoming to a diverse audience of users.

Additionally, the rebuilding of a more resilient structure to sea level rise and hurricanes will ensure the reserve's education staff and volunteer docents will be able to continue offering educational programs using the boardwalk. The grant is key to securing funds to permit, deconstruct the existing boardwalk, and re-build a new and more resilient boardwalk with interpretive signs.
