Overview
Grant Description
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources will work with NOAA, the Oyster Recovery Partnership, and the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science Horn Point Oyster Hatchery to place hatchery-produced spat-on-shell on up to 100 acres of oyster reefs in four targeted tributaries (Little Choptank, Tred Avon, St. Mary's, and Manokin) in the Maryland waters of the Chesapeake Bay. Spat-on-shell will be produced by the University of Maryland's Horn Point Hatchery.
Seeding work is planned for spring-summer-fall of 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026. Effects will be increased oyster densities on the target sites, which are anticipated to be self-sustaining, and increased ecosystem services including water filtration, fish habitat for federally managed fish species, and increased fish and oyster spawning capacity.
