Project Grant
Overview
Grant Description
Application Purpose: The purpose of this project is to construct the Southwest Light Rail Transit (SWLRT) Extension Project, which is an approximately 14.5-mile extension of the Metro Green Line (Central Corridor LRT) from downtown Minneapolis through the communities of St. Louis Park, Hopkins, Minnetonka, and Eden Prairie.
Activities Performed: The project includes construction of 16 stations (including the Eden Prairie Town Center, which will be constructed through a change order executed in 2020), 9 park-and-ride facilities with approximately 2500 total spaces, and a new railcar light maintenance facility (in Hopkins). One operations and maintenance facility (OMF), 20 traction power substations (TPSS), 25 signal bungalow sites, and other ancillary facilities are also part of the project. Additionally, the purchase of 27 light rail vehicles is included.
Expected Outcomes: The Metro Green Line Extension (also known as the Southwest Light Rail Project or SWLRT) is a generational investment in our region's transit system that adds 14.5 miles to the existing Metro Green Line, which connects downtown Minneapolis, downtown Saint Paul, and places in between. The new segment adds more stations in Minneapolis, plus St. Louis Park, Hopkins, Minnetonka, and Eden Prairie. That's a one-seat ride to job centers, cultural features, and each neighborhood along its tracks.
Intended Beneficiaries: This investment connects one city to the next, creating jobs for people from across Minnesota, building homegrown economies, and providing reliable transportation for thousands of residents. When our communities thrive, the rest of the region thrives too.
Subrecipient Activities: None.
