Overview
Grant Description
Application purpose: MassDOT will utilize the funding to support the Martha's Vineyard Transit Authority's (VTA) purchase of four (4) battery electric transit buses (two 35-ft and two 30-ft buses) under an FTA Low-No discretionary award announced on July 9, 2024.
The buses will replace vehicles which have reached the end of their useful lives.
MassDOT will also purchase inductive charging equipment installed during the manufacture of the buses, purchase three (3) DC portable fast chargers to be used both in the field as needed and in the maintenance facility.
The project will also provide funding for the implementation of an apprenticeship program for local high school students in partnership with the FTA's Transit Workforce Center (TWC) to train operators and maintenance staff on electric bus technology.
This funding will contribute to VTA's goal of fully electrifying its fleet and support the Commonwealth of Massachusetts climate action goals.

Intended beneficiaries: This project will provide new quiet and clean fuel battery electric replacement vehicles and charging capabilities for the Martha's Vineyard Transit Authority (VTA), bringing cleaner and quieter transit service to Martha's Vineyard residents.
The project will also help the VTA to train the transportation workforce of the future on electric vehicle technologies.
The project will support the VTA's goal of fully electrifying its fleet and Commonwealth of Massachusetts climate action goals.

THE LOW-NO PROGRAM PROVIDES FUNDING FOR THE PURCHASE OR LEASE OF ZERO-EMISSION AND LOW-EMISSION TRANSIT BUSES INCLUDING ACQUISITION CONSTRUCTION AND LEASING OF REQUIRED SUPPORTING FACILITIES SUCH AS RECHARGING REFUELING AND MAINTENANCE FACILITIES.
