Overview

Grant Description
The purpose of this project is to reduce invasive and noxious weed presence, density, and reproduction while reducing competition for native and desirable plant population viability and biodiversity. The Blackfoot River Corridor Noxious and Invasive Weed Management Project area is located along 96.5 miles of river frontage in Powell and Missoula counties.

The project begins at the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) River Junction Fishing Access Site (FAS) 38 miles east of Bonner, heading southeast on a 9-mile, rough, unmarked county road and terminates at the Weigh Station FAS 0.5 miles east of Bonner on Hwy. 200. There are 20 FWP Fishing Access Sites within the project area, multiple private and commercial landowners, State Department of Natural Resources Conservation (DNRC) and University of Montana (e.g., Lubrecht Experimental Forest) lands and Federal Bureau of Land Management managed lands.

The project area also represents cooperative management oversight between two county weed districts, Powell and Missoula, and three non-profits, the Blackfoot Challenge, the Big Blackfoot Chapter of Montana Trout Unlimited and The Nature Conservancy. Project objectives activities are to treat, map and monitor noxious invasive weeds along the Blackfoot River Corridor up to the high-water mark.

Goals expected deliverables outcomes include prevention of weed seed propagation and spread, reduction of existing populations by up to 50 , and to provide public inclusivity through outreach, education, and hands on weed pull events. Intended beneficiaries are landowners, land managers, recreationalists, producers and all those that seek to experience the natural beauty, diverse wildlife, and natural mineral and other resources within the watershed.
Funding Goals
CONNECT WITH YOUTH TRIBES UNDERSERVED AND NATUREDEPRIVED COMMUNITIES TO ENHANCE ACCESS TO QUALITY RECREATION OPPORTUNITIES AND FOSTER PUBLIC LANDS STEWARDSHIP. IDENTIFY AND REMOVE OUTDOOR RECREATION BARRIERS EXPAND RECREATION OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL AND PROVIDE AN ENHANCED MORE SUSTAINABLE RECREATIONAL EXPERIENCE BY DELIVERING UPTODATE AND ENGAGING VISITOR INFORMATION ONLINE AND IN PERSON. WILDFIRE FUELS MANAGEMENT ECOSYSTEM RESTORATION IN FORESTS RANGELANDS AND AQUATIC RESOURCES ADVANCE RESEARCH AND DECISION SUPPORT MODELS TO INFORM THE PROTECTION OF HIGH QUALITY HABITATS AND THE STRATEGIC RESTORATION OF DEGRADED SYSTEMS.
