Cooperative Agreement
Overview
Grant Description
The project exemplifies the regional context of natural open space and its value in an overall community plan for recreation, nature study interpretation, trail linkage, and environmental preservation.
The site is owned by the City of Henderson and is located at the northern end of the McCullough Range, south and west of Horizon Ridge Pkwy. The project area covers approximately 1,300 acres and consists primarily of volcanic rock of Tertiary origin.
The project consists of scenic trails, a trailhead, scenic overlooks, interpretive locations, a restroom building, and a solar-powered parking area for buses and vehicles. The interpretive locations will create educational opportunities and destinations for all ages. The nature preserve will connect to the Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area via the McCullough Hills Trail. Distinguishing Black Mountain as a nature preserve will ensure that future generations of Southern Nevadans can experience the unique geological features and sensitive species in the area.
Purposely low impact, the project would protect sensitive flora and fauna protected under state law, ensuring the species will flourish for years to come. There is an interest in this area for more adventurous activities, and if the project permits, it could include a zip line and/or a ropes course. It is evident through community surveys that the public enjoys being outdoors and being able to experience a variety of activities.
The City of Henderson does not have a negotiated indirect rate.
The Black Mountain Nature Preserve submitted and approved for Round 18 funding through the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act (SNPLMA), and the award amount is $5,608,540.00. The City of Henderson submitted a project for a grant before the award funding was announced for the Summit Trail through the Nevada Recreational Trails Program 2022 Grants, which is funded through the Federal Highway Administration. The grant request was in the amount of $17,809.00 for up to a 0.75-mile trail segment in the southeastern corner of the project site.
