Project Grant

Overview

Grant Description
Application purpose: This award will be utilized to construct IndyGo's third bus rapid transit line (BRT) the Blue Line.

The Blue Line will largely serve as a replacement to the existing Route 8 local service, which is one of the highest ridership and most productive routes in the IndyGo system.

Activities performed: The project includes design, right-of-way acquisition, and construction of 24 miles of mixed and exclusive bus lanes.

The project will include 30 stations; 28 of which will be newly constructed as a part of the CIG project (of the remaining 2, one is the Downtown Transit Center where there will be no work performed and the other is the western terminus which will be funded and constructed by the airport).

The project also includes the purchase of 18 60-foot articulated clean diesel vehicles, installation of transit signal priority, and infrastructure improvements such as sidewalks, roadways, driveways, signals, and drainage.

Expected outcomes: This project is expected to provide more frequent and reliable transit service as well as improve access to jobs and services in central Indianapolis.

This project will also provide connectivity from the Indianapolis International Airport through the Indianapolis Central Business District to the Town of Cumberland, Indiana.

Intended beneficiaries: The project will provide improvements in the corridor served by IndyGo's existing Route 8, which is one of the highest ridership lines in the IndyGo system.

This line will help provide better access to jobs, health care, higher education, cultural and community assets, several neighborhoods, and more easily connect the riders, residents, and tourists from the airport all the way to the Town of Cumberland, Indiana.

Drivers and residents along the corridor will also benefit as the introduction of the dedicated bus lanes in the center of the road will limit high-conflict turn movements, improving driver and pedestrian safety.

Subrecipient activities: Not applicable to this award.
