Grant Description
Application Purpose: This grant will provide funding to rehabilitate the 59th/60th Street University of Chicago Station on the Metra Electric (ME) rail line in order to improve ADA accessibility, maintain service, and accommodate new ridership that is anticipated due to expansion of the University of Chicago and construction of the Obama Library.
Activities Performed: The project includes the rehabilitation of the 59th Street Depot and the currently closed 60th Street Depot, installation of elevators to provide ADA compliant access to the platforms, platform amenities, reconstruction of platform-level headhouses, and viaduct improvements.
Expected Outcomes: The improvements will bring the station into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, reopen the closed 60th Street Depot, and bring assets into a state of good repair.
Intended Beneficiaries: The intended beneficiaries of the project include all users of the 59th/60th Street University of Chicago Station, particularly those with disabilities.
