Project Grant
Overview
Grant Description
Young Peoples Recovery Program (YPRP) - Interborough Developmental and Consultation Center (IDCC) proposes to serve 450 Transitional Aged Youth (TAY) between the ages of 16-25 years diagnosed with substance use disorders and/or co-occurring SUD and mental disorders, and their families/primary caregivers. The program aims to provide age-appropriate, highly coordinated, recovery-oriented evidence-based practices that ensure youth voice and choice. In the first year, 50 youth will be served, followed by 100 youth each year thereafter.
The geographical catchment area for the project is Brooklyn, New York, with a particular focus on the highly diverse, disproportionately impoverished, and stressed neighborhoods of Brownsville, Bedford Stuyvesant, Crown Heights, and East New York. These neighborhoods are home to 228,226 TAYs. The proposed project aims to build a positive, multi-system, family-focused approach into youth clinical and recovery services, as well as wraparound services.
The goal of the project is to ensure youth and family access to, engagement, and retention in IDCC's existing continuum of substance abuse and behavioral health services and recovery supports. This will be achieved through the implementation of evidence-based CRAFT and A-CRA, the addition of youth and peer supports, and systematic community development to broaden the range of culturally, linguistically, and religiously diverse supports available to youth and families. The aim is to ensure success during treatment and as youth transition to independence in the community.
Over the life of the project, IDCC will build relationships with 30 new diverse community agencies per year. These agencies will increasingly engage in therapeutic and recovery-oriented supports, which will be reflected in each individual treatment plan. Additional project staff will also allow for systematic training of all IDCC substance abuse and behavioral health staff in the project's evidence-based practices (EBPs), CRAFT, and A-CRA. Ongoing technical assistance will be provided to staff as they encounter complex, real-world situations.
Furthermore, additional youth and family peer support staff will be hired to help TAYs and their families fully engage in treatment and recovery planning. TAYs and families will have access to IDCC's rich array of substance abuse, behavioral health, and recovery-oriented services. They will also be securely connected to recovery-oriented supports, including those of the Medicaid Managed Care Health Homes and a wealth of community providers with whom IDCC has long-term and fully operationalized partnerships.
The project evaluation will demonstrate significant increases in treatment retention, abstinence or reduction of substance use, and improved family function.
