Project Grant

Overview

Grant Description
Cooperative agreements for the Garrett Lee Smith State/Tribal Youth Suicide Prevention and Early Intervention Program - The Illinois Department of Public Health (DPH) will advance the Illinois Suicide Prevention Strategic Plan by implementing a statewide Illinois Youth Suicide Prevention Project (IYSPP). The statewide activities of the IYSPP are designed to implement youth (ages 10-24) suicide prevention and early intervention strategies.

This will be accomplished through the following strategies:
- Increase the number of school-based health centers with enhanced depression screening and referral activities.
- Increase the understanding of challenges to timely referrals to appropriate community community-based mental health care and treatment programs for youth who are at risk for suicide or suicide attempt.
- Increase postvention resources to families, friends, and organizations involved with youth who attempted or died of suicide, in addition to establishing a learning collaborative to build capacity for effective school-based suicide prevention.
- Increase capacity of systems to effectively identify youth who are at risk for suicide by training staff in child welfare, juvenile justice, and institutions of higher education.

Each strategy will identify avenues to address to promote the reduction of access to lethal means, in addition to promoting and assuring treatment and prevention services for diverse cultural populations which address the specific risk and protective factors of the various populations they are serving.

Data and evaluation from each of the project activities will be utilized to build awareness and further inform the implementation of the comprehensive Illinois Suicide Prevention Strategic Plan.
