Project Grant

Overview

Grant Description
Increasing Behavioral Health Access Post-COVID Pandemic (IBHA) - The Increasing Behavioral Health Access Post-COVID Pandemic (IBHA) initiative through University of New Mexico Psychiatric Center (UNMPC) seeks to enable UNMPC to support and restore the delivery of clinical services that were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and effectively address the needs of individuals (children and youth ages 5-17 and adults) with SED, SMI, and individuals with SMI or SED and co-occurring substance use disorders.

The goals of IBHA are as follows:

1. Sustain capacity for delivery of outpatient CMHC services for individuals with SMI, SED, and COD.
2. Expand workforce capacity through training and supervision.
3. Increase capacity to deliver CMHC services by telehealth.
4. Develop and provide resources to address the mental health needs of CMHC staff.
5. Utilize program evaluation to ensure continuous quality improvement.

To achieve these goals, IBHA will focus clinical efforts on the implementation of the following evidence-based practices: Seeking Safety (SS), Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Psychosis (CBTP), Medication Assisted Treatment, Coordinated Specialty Care, and Teen Mental Health First Aid (MHFA).

IBHA will enhance the UNMPC workforce expertise by partnering with experts to provide training in SS, PCIT, Teen MHFA, and CBTP in the first year of the grant. Additionally, IBHA will utilize the Creating Presence, an organizational change model, to help organizations become trauma-informed, trauma-responsive, and trauma-resilient. Creating Presence and other existing programs will support UNMPC staff to increase their ability to handle the stress of working during the COVID pandemic, as well as stress from working with a highly traumatized population.

Grant funds will be used to purchase equipment to increase capacity for telehealth services. Evaluation data will be used to track treatment progress and increased access to services. Evaluation quality improvement reports will be shared with the UNMPC leadership to impact policies and procedures that enhance services to children, youth, and adults in the UNMPC system.

IBHA is expected to enroll 500 children, youth, and adults per year for two years, and enrollment will begin by month 4 of the first year.
