Overview
Grant Description
Healing our community through diabetes treatment and education - the American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities in Tooele County, Utah reflect the same diabetes prevalence experienced by AI/AN communities throughout the nation.
The Skull Valley Band of Goshutes, whose reservation is located in Tooele County, are the owners and operators of Nat-Su Healthcare, which includes a well-equipped and well-staffed health clinic. They are determined to reduce the diabetes rates among the county's native population by increasing data through increased data surveillance, increased diabetes treatment, and diabetes prevention/reduction of incidences through increased and effective diabetes education.
Increased data collection is important so that we can get more accurate and up-to-date rates. Treatment is vital so that we can prolong the lives and increase the functionality of those who test positive for diabetes. Increased diabetes education is important so as to grow a healthier generation of native people.
We look forward to establishing better connections with our AI/AN community in Tooele County through health fairs and community events, outreach to schools, and increased visibility.
