Project Grant
Overview
Grant Description
SEP #4 Auburn University Gulf Coast Engineering Research Station
This project furthers Auburn University's land-, sea-, and space-grant mandate by creating a world-class research facility in Orange Beach, AL. The facility will provide a space where engineers and scientists from academic institutions and private industry can engage in engineering research of critical importance to coastal Alabama, the Gulf Coast region, and other communities.
With $9,270,000 of funding, provided through a subaward to Auburn University from the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, this 60-month project meets the RESTORE Act primary qualifying eligible activity for infrastructure development benefiting the economy and ecological resources.
The project involves the design and construction of the AU Gulf Coast Engineering Research Station (GCERS). The GCERS will be led by the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering at Auburn University in partnership with the coastal community of Orange Beach. Once constructed, GCERS operations will apply to all other RESTORE Act qualifying eligible activities through a focus on coastal engineering and science research of critical importance to coastal Alabama and other Gulf of Mexico communities and ecosystems.
Research activities at GCERS will include water quality protection and restoration, engineering approaches for the protection and restoration of coastal estuaries and upland freshwater wetlands, coastal infrastructure and economic resilience and sustainability, coastal emergency management and transportation systems, and STEM education opportunities for K-12 students.
