Overview

Grant Description
Application purpose: The award will help support the implementation of the South Dekalb Transit Hub project.

The transit hub provides a safe convenient place for passengers to wait and transfer between buses with enhanced amenities and services.

The transit hub will also connect MARTA's bus services to other travel modes which includes walking, biking, MARTA Mobility (paratransit), and other first/last mile options such as carpooling and ridesharing (e.g. Uber and Lyft).

Activities performed: The activities to be performed under this award include support for the engineering, environmental final design, right-of-way acquisition, and construction of the new transit hub facility.

Expected outcomes: The South Dekalb Transit Hub project initiative aims to provide significant benefits to the South Dekalb community.

Safety improvements are a key focus particularly along the Candler Road segment between the I-20 interchange and HF Shepherd Drive where severe crashes including both auto and bike-ped are prevalent.

By providing a dedicated space for seamless transfers, the transit hub reduces the need for pedestrians to traverse busy and hazardous roadways significantly enhancing overall transit safety.

Moreover, the hub includes amenities like public and employee restrooms, a bus operator break area, customer service offices, Breeze card vending machines, real-time bus arrival information, and shelter canopies with protections from the weather ensuring comfort and convenience for both bus operators and passengers while awaiting transit services.

Intended beneficiaries: The South Dekalb Transit Hub project initiative aims to provide significant benefits to the South Dekalb community.

Benefits include a safe and secure transfer area for the community providing a central transfer location linking bus routes and other modes along with easier access to essential services and employment opportunities.

Subrecipient activities: Not applicable - no subrecipient activities included under this award.
