Project Grant

Overview

Grant Description
Application Purpose: The purpose of this award is to support the planning and project development activities for the Campbellton Community Investment Corridor BRT project in advance of a Small Starts grant agreement.

Activities Performed: Activities to be done under this agreement include planning and project development activities for the Campbellton Community Investment Corridor BRT project in advance of a Small Starts grant agreement.

Expected Outcomes: The BRT itself will help address equity by making a substantial investment in new high-quality transit in the community. The BRT will operate in dedicated lanes for 100% of the route providing faster, more reliable service on a corridor with the second highest ridership bus route in the MARTA system. A goal of the Campbellton Corridor BRT project is to benefit the Environmental Justice (EJ) populations living within in the corridor; 94% are minorities and 22.8% live below the poverty level. Reconfiguration of the roadway will improve safety outcomes as well. The Atlanta Transportation Plan identified the entirety of Campbellton Road as part of the city's High Injury Network (2012-2016). Representing only 6% of Atlanta's roadways, the corridor recorded 72% of fatalities and 42% of injuries.

Intended Beneficiaries: The implemented new BRT service will enhance the lives of people who live, work, and play along the corridor. The majority of the population of the corridor (94%) identify as a racial minority. The BRT will operate in dedicated lanes for 100% of the route providing faster, more reliable service on a corridor with the second highest ridership bus route in the MARTA system. The project also helps reduce barriers to opportunity. The eastern terminus of the BRT will be the existing Oakland City Rail Station; from here passengers have a one-seat ride to the biggest job centers in the Atlanta area: Downtown, Midtown, and the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. By ensuring affordable housing remains near the BRT, this planning study enables community residents to stay and benefit from this improved accessibility to major job centers. It will also reduce barriers to accessing other critical needs like healthcare services and education.

Subrecipient Activities: Not applicable - no subrecipient activities in this award.
