Award purpose:
The U.S. Geological Survey, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly SLO University) and Cal Poly partners are mutually interested and desire to collaborate in areas of scientific research, educational development and outreach benefiting the U.S. Geological Survey and the students and faculty at Cal Poly SLO University in San Luis Obispo, CA.

The USGS-CAWSC, Cal Poly SLO University, and Cal Poly partners have a common interest in a continued collaboration which includes Cal Poly partners providing facilities to support collaborative research, education, and outreach opportunities.

Future collaborations, which will be made by separate agreements, may target issues of water supply, water quality, hydrologic hazards, and biological resources which are of critical importance to the state of California and the nation.

Activities to be performed:
The parties enter into this agreement in order to establish a mechanism for cooperative scientific research, educational development, and technological collaboration to maximize contributions to scientific research and practical applications for solving environmental problems, benefiting local communities, school systems, governmental agencies and the general public in California and the Western United States.

Expected deliverables or outcomes:
The USGS-CAWSC's current capacity to engage in multi-disciplinary research will be expanded by collaborating with researchers at Cal Poly SLO University and Cal Poly partners who have complementary expertise and interests on scientific matters.

Through separate USGS funding opportunities, current Cal Poly University students and faculty may be provided opportunities for joint research and consultation agreements in the areas including, but not limited to: geology, hydrology, chemistry, computer science and engineering, biological sciences and physics.

Approximately 6,300 square feet (SQFT) within buildings 84 and 50J will be fully maintained and furnished with all utilities and operational services necessary to support this effort.

Additionally, 12,000 (SQFT) of wareyard space directly adjacent to buildings 84 and 50J will be provided.

Intended beneficiaries:
USGS and Cal Poly facility and students.
