Grant Description
Application purpose: Is to construct a small Starts South Corridor Rapid Transit Project.

The project is a 20-mile Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project along the existing South Dade Busway from the Dadeland South Metrorail Station to SW 344th Street in Florida City.

The proposed project includes construction of 14 new stations, significant upgrades to the two existing terminal stations, minor improvements at 16 other existing stations, signal preemption for buses, and crossing gate arms at street crossings.

The project does not include the purchase of any new buses but includes costs for special vehicle branding.

The service is planned to operate every 7.5 minutes during weekday peak periods, every 20 minutes during weekday evening and off-peak periods, and every 30 minutes on weekends.

The forecasted daily ridership using current year inputs of population and employment is 14,700 daily linked trips.

Activities performed: Scope 140-20 includes the construction of intermodal stations, stops, and terminals.

SCC 20 includes the following subcategory: 20.01- At-grade station stop shelter mall terminal platform.

The useful life for this item is 25 years.

This item is for construction of fourteen (14) BRT stations with center platforms with a vaulted covering structure open at each end.

The model BRT station platforms are 20 ft. wide and 120 ft. long.

The stations will feature typical passenger amenities (benches, trash receptacles, bike racks), variable message signage, ticket vending machines, public address system, and closed circuit television cameras.

Stations will feature an air-conditioned waiting area and WiFi access.

This activity line item also includes improvements at two (2) existing terminals (Dadeland South renovation (re-canvas roof, roadway curbing upgrades allowance) and 344th St terminal station (canopy extension, fencing upgrades allowance).

Scope 140-50: This SCC category includes traffic signal improvements, railroad-style crossing gates at all roadway intersections, intelligent transportation systems equipment, and signage.

Fare collection equipment including ticket vending machines, fare gates, and ticket validators, closed circuit television, public address system, and WiFi system.

SCC 50 includes the following applicable subcategory: 50.06. Fare collection system and equipment.

The improvements include 64 ticket vending machines, 28 station turnstiles, 16 hand-held ticket validators, and 32 stand-alone ticket validators.

This item has a useful life of 25 years.

Expected outcomes: DTPW expected outcomes for this funding will be to improve safety, operating efficiency, transit travel times, and passenger comfort.

It improves access to the Metrorail system for the corridors, downtown commuters, as well as to major destinations in the corridor.

Intended beneficiaries: Miami-Dade Transit patrons.
