Project Grant

Overview

Grant Description
Grass carp: This grant will fund the 2026 field season with four strike teams along with modeling and research efforts.

This grant, the focus of the Lake Erie grass carp actions is on the western basin of Lake Erie, specifically in the Sandusky and Maumee rivers.

The goal of the project is to remove 390 diploid grass carp annually from Lake Erie to suppress their spawning potential.

Ohio Erie Canal: The Ohio Erie Canal (OEC) was identified as a risk for aquatic invasive species (AIS) transfer between the Great Lakes and Mississippi River watersheds.

The Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife partnered with the USACE to close the OEC connection in 2020.

These grant funds will be used to maintain the barriers that were installed.

Little Killbuck Creek: An additional viable pathway for the transfer of AIS between the Great Lakes and Mississippi River watersheds exists at Little Killbuck Creek, Ohio.

This connection will be severed by a rock berm.

Construction of the berm is being conducted in phases.

Phase 1 is complete.

This grant funds Phase 2 construction and includes raising the grade of Garden Isle Road, improvements to the existing pumping station, and installing AIS screening structures.
