Project Grant
Overview
Grant Description
The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources is proposing a plan to acquire, from a willing seller, key parcels of land containing Red Hills Salamander (RHS) habitat, in an effort to permanently protect and restore some of the best habitat for and populations of the RHS across its range, over the long-term stabilizing and eventually improving the status of the species.
This fee simple land purchase of approximately 4,719 acres in Monroe County, combined with other adjacent state-owned lands acquired through Recovery Land Acquisition Funds or under current negotiation, will result in over 22,500 contiguous acres of permanently protected habitat suitable for the RHS.

Funding Goals
THE PRIMARY GOAL OF THIS PROGRAM IS TO PROMOTE FEDERALLY LISTED AND AT-RISK SPECIES CONSERVATION THROUGH THE ACQUISITION OF HABITAT ASSOCIATED WITH APPROVED AND PERMITTED HABITAT CONSERVATION PLANS (HCP). ALL LAND ACQUIRED THROUGH THESE GRANTS COMPLEMENTS, BUT DOES NOT REPLACE, THE MITIGATION, MINIMIZATION, AND OR MONITORING COMMITMENTS OF THE HCP. THUS, THIS WORK IS ADDITIVE TO THE CONSERVATION COMMITMENTS ENTERED INTO WHEN HCPS ARE PERMITTED AND SERVES AS A MEANINGFUL WAY TO LEVERAGE NON-FEDERAL INVESTMENT IN SPECIES RECOVERY AND CONNECT CONSERVATION LANDS ACROSS THE LANDSCAPE.
