Project Grant

Overview

Grant Description
The Pennsylvania Highlands region is rich in ecological, recreational, and cultural resources. Located south of the Kittatinny Ridge, it features rolling green hills, thriving forests, rocky terrain, wetlands, and valued archaeological and historical sites. It is a large area containing nearly 1.5 million acres, including William Penn State Forest, five state parks, and multiple state game lands.

The proximity to large urban centers means that the area faces a very high risk of conversion through loss of habitat and open space. However, there is a concerted effort being made by nonprofit groups, land conservancies, and government agencies that recognize the Pennsylvania Highlands as a unique ecological, recreational, agricultural, and cultural treasure and are committed to its preservation.

Funds used from this grant will help to acquire 493 acres in West Nantmeal and Wallace Townships, Chester County, for an addition to the William Penn State Forest. This acquisition will protect water resources and allow for increased public outdoor passive recreation in the Schuylkill Highlands.
