Overview

Grant Description
The Sustain Our Great Lakes (SOGL) program is a public-private partnership among the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), four other federal agencies, five private foundations, one local utility, and two corporations. The purpose of the program is to support the implementation of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI), a federal initiative designed to protect, maintain, and restore the chemical, biological, and physical integrity of the Great Lakes ecosystem.

The program provides grants for habitat restoration and enhancement, invasive species control, and wildlife conservation within the Great Lakes Basin. With support from program funding partners, NFWF has administered the SOGL program since 2006. With the GLRI funding to be provided by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 2022, NFWF will:

A) Award and manage 42 new GLRI-funded grants in 2022 and an additional 5-10 grants awarded under the 2022 and 2023 funding cycles of Sustain Our Great Lakes and its subsidiary programs, the Chi-Cal Rivers Fund and the Southeast Michigan Resilience Fund.
B) Manage all grants to be awarded in 2022 and those funded by this agreement in future years.
C) Monitor and evaluate the outcomes of SOGL grants, including on-the-ground monitoring for key species.
D) Develop the 2023 Request for Proposals.
E) Solicit and receive 2023 proposals.
F) Coordinate 2023 proposal reviews.
G) Work to develop new program partnerships.
H) Implement program communications efforts.
