Project Grant

Overview

Grant Description
Purpose: The purpose of this grant is to advance the development and implementation of sustainable polymer composites by transitioning from batch processing to a semi-continuous liquid phase mixing process.

This involves scaling up production methods to enhance efficiency, integrating fillers into the composites, and validating the improvements in tire performance and plant efficiency.

Activities to be performed:
Procure and install necessary equipment.

Conduct tests to ensure optimal equipment operation.

Perform initial liquid phase mixing test using equipment.

Produce first viable product.

Demonstrate the ability to run semi-continuously.

Conduct trials of liquid phase mixing with fillers.

Outreach to filler producers.

Tailor and optimize liquid phase mixing for fillers.

Conduct compound mix trial with material created from liquid phase mixing process in preparation for full-scale production plant.

Conduct lab testing to evaluate mixing efficiency and tire wear improvements.

Assess energy efficiency improvement from dry mix to liquid mixed process.

Expected outcomes:
Establish a liquid phase mixing development center, demonstrating successful transition to a semi-continuous process with consistent operation rates.

Demonstrate improved dispersion and reinforcement of fillers in polymer composites, leading to an anticipated 10% improvement in compound mixing efficiency and a 25% improvement in tire wear.

Intended beneficiaries:
Tire manufacturers will gain access to advanced polymer composites.

The development of these new materials will benefit consumers and the broader ecosystem by improving performance.
