Project Grant
Overview
Grant Description
The City of Sanford is seeking EDA funding to reconstruct the existing seawall around Marina Isle to provide a state-of-the-art facility that will increase the seawall height to protect from future flooding and increased intensity of storms.
This project at Marina Island (aka Marina Isle) is part of a larger ongoing effort by the City of Sanford to continually improve flood protection for the area.
Approximately 2,024 feet of seawall will be fortified and raised in elevation by two feet.
The scope of work for the proposed investment involves the reconstruction of a portion of Sanford's Marina Isle seawall that has been in place for over 50 years and has been heavily impacted by 2022 storms (Hurricane Ian and Tropical Storm Nicole).
The seawall protects a prime downtown development area known as Marina Isle, a peninsula constructed in the 1960s in the Lake Monroe portion of the St. Johns River.
Marina Isle is the focal point of the downtown Sanford area but is underutilized due to previous flooding, and a blighted marina facility.
Reconstruction of the seawall will allow redevelopment to move forward with a better protected facility.
Project tasks will include seawall design, permitting, and construction.
