Title
Compact Sodium Battery-based Energy Storage System for Integration with Wind Energy
Abstract
Decarbonization of the U.S. electricity grid requires increased grid flexibility to ensure that carbon-free electricity continues to be delivered affordably and reliably to homes and businesses across America. The intermittency of variable renewable energy sources (wind, solar) will require a massive expansion of energy storage to balance system demand with intermittent renewable supply. Without affordable energy storage, that can be scaled to grid-scale and deployed to firm intermittent wind and solar energy the transition to a carbon-free electricity grid will be longer, more disruptive, and more expensive. In this proposed Phase I STTR project, Adena Power, in partnership with The Ohio State University (OSU) and Accelerate Wind will advance the technical readiness of Adenaĺs sodium solid-state battery technology and assess the technical and economic viability of integrating it with wind energy assets to create a hybrid wind-storage system. Success will result in a hybrid wind generation-storage system, that enhances the operational flexibility & efficiency of Adenaĺs long-duration energy storage (LDES) solution. This project provides a great opportunity to accelerate the commercialization of Adenaĺs innovative LDES solution and transition licensed technology previously developed at National Labs with DOE-Office of Electricity funding into a product that provides tangible economic, societal, and environmental benefits. Adena has proven the fundamental battery science and is ready to demonstrate through meaningful system- level testing a low-cost (30 % lower installed cost than Li-ion) and intrinsically safe energy storage solution.
